"Three great scenes. No bad scenes." - The definition of a good movie, according to Howard Hawks (Quentin Tarantino's favorite director, who did Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Red River, and To Have and Have Not, amongst others)
Star Trek (four and a half stars total) Three great scenes: Kirk's birth, Nimoy's Spock saving and meeting the young Kirk, Nero's refusal to surrender, to name just a few. And there were no bad scenes. All time travel plots are convoluted, so that aside, the only thing that comes up lacking is the villain. Nero is not what Pharaoh was to Moses, what the Joker is to Batman, or what Darth Vader was to Luke Skywalker, and maybe he's not supposed to be. That might have overshadowed the rise of Captain Kirk and crew. Have you ever watched a movie that was so inspirational and uplifting it made you want to run a mile, eat more fruits and vegetables, or hug a stranger? I'm as surprised as anyone to say, that's Star Trek. When was the last time you had good, old-fashioned fun all the way through a movie? Action, comedy, drama, romance, and suspense - that's Star Trek. Has there ever been a movie you were wrong in thinking you wouldn't like? That's Star Trek. I can't say I would have made all the same casting choices, but that doesn't detract from my contentment with seeing Tyler Perry, Winona Ryder, and alien races that look like they came from the Star Wars cantina scene. The cinematography is angular, fast, and spinning, but without feeling frantic, hyperactive, or nauseous. The movie starts with a stunning (no pun intended) solo French horn, cuts to silence when someone is ejected into space, blares the Beastie Boys (makes you realize how old you are when it's treated like oldies music), fills in the thrills with sweeping strings, and pays respect to the original theme song over the closing credits. The best part of the soundtrack isn't what's played though. It's what's not. I'm so sick of LOUD, droning, consistent soundtracks. That's not Star Trek. If you've ever imagined meeting your future self and wondered what you would say, see Star Trek.

Just saw it today, and loved it. This is the best movie in a series that actually has some decent flicks. 4 stars in my book, best movie I've seen in theater since Batman (which was also 4 stars).
