I didn't mention it in my previous post, but my hands-down favorite Beatles' album is Sgt. Pepper's. The only song that I don't like from it is "Fixing a Hole." When I saw that there was an all-reggae cover album featuring various well-known Jamaican artists, I had to check it out. It's every bit as good as its source material. The versions are simultaneously fresh and reverent, much like the others on my list below. Before I started listening to every Beatles' album to compile my last post's list, I knew that they were P.M. Dawn's favorite group. Now I'm able to identify all the snippets that I took for original beatmaking before. I used to think P.M. Dawn's only Beatles' cover was the one listed below. Now I know that "The Beautiful" comes from "Baby You're a Rich Man."
Beatles' Covers That I Prefer to the Original Versions
1. "With a Little Help from My Friends" - Joe Cocker (1968); The Wonder Years TV theme performed at Woodstock
2. "Got to Get You Into My Life" - Earth, Wind & Fire (1978); Grammy winner
3. "Day Tripper" - Yellow Magic Orchestra (1979); groundbreaking Japanese "technopop"
4. "Dear Prudence" - Siouxsie & The Banshees (1983); dreamy like Cocteau Twins
5. "All You Need Is Love" - Echo & The Bunnymen (1984); segues into "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine"
6. "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" - P.M. Dawn (1993); flava beats nasal
7. "Yesterday" - Boyz II Men (1994); listed in the Guinness Book of Records as "the most recorded song in the history of popular music"
8. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" - Eddie Vedder (2002); from the movie soundtrack, I Am Sam
9. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (vs. "What More Can I Say") - Danger Mouse (2004); mash-up of The White Album by The Beatles and The Black Album by Jay-Z
10. "With a Little Dub from My Friends (feat. Luciano and U Roy)" - Easy Star All-Stars (2009); along with every other song from the same cover album
