I admit that this is a truly horrible picture in every way (no one's facing the camera and it'd be too blurry to tell even if they were), but it's the only picture I have with my middle brother and his wife where he's not making a silly face (I mean that in the best possible way) and it leads into a great story where I can brag about them. This last New Year's Day, we all gathered at my parents' house for a big dinner (that's my dad's parents and his brother seated above). The night before, I got sick with fluids ejecting every which way out of my body. Whatever I had (I blame Jalisco's) I passed on to my mom, so she was out of commission for preparing the big dinner. My middle brother and his wife took over the salad and setting the table with fancy styrofoam china. The picture above is them putting the final touches on a meal that was shared by both sets of my grandparents (all four still kickin' into their 90s!), all my siblings and their spouses, my parents obviously, and my son. I think it came off nicely considering the short notice and the fact that they were potty training their new puppy throughout the meal's preparation.
1. What has been your proudest moment as a registered nurse? Well, I have to say that there is no particular experience to speak of that I can think of. I do, however, always feel good when I help a laboring women deliver her baby successfully. There’s actually a lot of work that goes into for me. I’m a teacher, comfortor, cheerleader, and patient advocate (among other things) and whenever I get thank you cards saying how grateful these families are for my help that really makes all the hard work worth it.
2. What was your first impression of your spouse? From a physical point of view I was pleasantly surprised that he was very good looking because one of the girls I knew at the time had told me that he was “ok.” He was HOT! His wardrobe, however, I thought was very strange because I had never seen a boy dress like that. He was wearing these white sailor shoes with no socks (yikes!) and some white somewhat high-water pants and a red and white striped jersey. He did have great hair as I remember.
3. How would you feel if I told you that the women at my work have seen your husband in the family picture we took on New Year's Day and they think he's F-I-N-E? I would have to say “I know, right? He’s mine!” This sounds kind of bad on my part but it turned out to be so funny that I’m going to share it anyway. One time, I was driving on a road way across town from where we live. I was sitting at a red light and looked over at a truck sitting next to me. It was a really nice red truck which is why it caught my attention. I then proceeded to notice the driver had very nice tan, defined arms resting on the steering wheel. I then noticed as I leaned forward that he had nice rich brown hair with long sideburns and a soul patch. He was kind of looking away from me but I thought this guy was pretty good-lookin’. He then turned to face forward and I realized it was (my husband) in his work truck! I laughed and laughed at myself because I couldn’t believe that I was checking out my own husband!
4. What's the best thing about being the baby in your family? I think I really got to know my parents the best because I was the only child for a whole year by myself and there was a lot of attention on me. I was also parented by the good things and bad things my siblings ahead of me had done and since most of them were generally pretty well behaved and trusted, I was allowed a lot of freedom. I remember one particular experience as I was taking driver’s ed, my mother went driving with me and when I looked over she had her eyes closed. I said “Mom! Aren’t you worried I’m going to crash or something?” She replied, “Honey, I’ve been through this so many times, I’ve learned it’s no big deal. We’re old and tired. You can do whatever you want.” Of course, she was somewhat joking but as I look back on my teenage years, I pretty much got to do whatever I wanted as long as I was good.
5. If you had been raised in the city instead of the country, how might you be different today? That’s a tough question because I don’t really think I qualify as being raised in the country because I moved to the city when I was eight and really how much do you retain personality wise before the age of eight?
6. If you could go back in time and see either of your parents at any age, which would you choose, at what age, and why? I would love to see my parents in their dating each other days because I have no idea how or why they fell in love because they are from two different planets. It would be nice to see it in action.
7. What's your zodiac sign and what does it mean to you? Sagittarius and absolutely nothing.
8. Before you got married, how many kids did you want? I always knew that I wanted a large family because I grew up in one and it was fun and I thought is was great to have so many siblings to learn from and now we are all really good friends.
9. What was your worst subject in grade school? I actually did well in all subjects but I liked math the least. Most of it doesn’t make sense in my brain.
10. What's your favorite scripture passage and why? Doctrine and Covenants, Section 6: 34-37 ("Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail. Behold, I do not condemn you; go your ways and sin no more; perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you.") One time as a teen, I was having a particularly hard time with life. I was scared of failure and not being able to make right decisions. I decided to do the old flip open the scriptures gig and landed on this one. Especially at that time and even to this day, those passages give me courage and strength.
11. What's the first question you'll ask God face to face? Wow! This is a very hard question... um... I honestly cannot answer this question because I have no idea. I think I have about 1000 questions and none of them are good enough to be first.
12. Do you still have your tonsils, and if not, how long have you been without? Yes and they are no good to me. I’m thinking of having them removed because I have chronic sinusitis and continually get strep throat. It’s the pits!
13. What was the last movie you watched and what did you think about it? The last full movie I watched was Marley and Me. I thought it was really a good, fun, family movie. I was thinking during the movie that I was so glad our baby G.G. did not behave like this dog and I was so glad! It’s a movie I would like to add to my collection someday.
14. Do you prefer your toilet paper to roll over or under and why? Over, because I hate having to reach under the toilet paper roll to find the start. It’s much easier over and it just seems like that’s the right way to do it.
15. Would you karaoke in front of your coworkers and why (or why not)? No, I wouldn’t karaoke in front of anyone because I do not sing well nor do I try to sing well. I don’t really like to do things where I totally humiliate myself.
16. If you knew you could try anything and not fail, what dream would you attempt? I would love to compete in the Olympics and win an Olympic gold medal and know what it feels like to be the best in the world at something. That would be awesome!
17. What's the best part of your day now? Well, since I have two types of days (work and off), I’ll give my favorite part of each. On my work day, my favorite part of the day is coming home to (my husband). As soon as I walk through the door, we hug and as he hugs me he gives me a good lower back rub for a minute or so because he knows that’s the part that’s always killing me after a long day of work. He also has dinner ready for me to eat which is awesome too. On my off days, I love my alone time. I enjoy doing whatever I want when I want. Sounds selfish because it is and I guess one day I’ll have to give it up somewhat.
18. What's your average nap length and do ever work swing shifts? Average is two hours! I love naps! I’m not sure what swing shifts are????? (answer: shifts that bridge graveyard (night) shifts and normal work days or vice versa)
19. If you were kidnapped by pirates and forced to get a tattoo, what and where would it be? Lol! Interesting question. It sounds really lame but I’ve always thought that if I were to get a tattoo I would get a beautiful butterfly on my hip!
20. What's your favorite sport and why? Volleyball is one. I think it is really fun to both watch and play. I had a lot of fun playing it in high school but I never get to play anymore. I really enjoy playing tennis these days also and it’s also fun to watch too. It’s a close tie.
