The Cure Is As Old As I Am

In honor of their new album out today, I'm including a list (big surpise) of my top twenty Cure songs. But first, I'd like to touch on what seems to me an unfair misrepresentation of the band. The general public associates them strictly with gothic rock, whereas they're influenced in equal parts by psychadelic and punk rock, jazz-rock fusion, and synth pop. Most people seem to assume that all their music is "dark and tormented." But The Cure is the most elated band I know, as evidenced right off the bat (no pun intended) on the first song here (which sounds a little bit like the Star Wars cantina band):

1. "Do the Hansa" (1979) extra B-side on the re-release 12" single, Boys Don't Cry
2. "Primary" (1981) from the album, Faith
3. "Push" (1985) from the album, The Head on the Door
4. "Inbetween Days" (1985) from the album, The Head on the Door
5. "The Exploding Boy" (1985) B-side on the single, Inbetween Days; my absolute favorite Cure song
6. "A Few Hours After This..." (1985) B-side on the single, Inbetween Days
7. "Just Like Heaven" (1987) from the album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
8. "Plainsong" (1989) from the album, Disintegration
9. "Pictures of You" (1989) from the album, Disintegration
10. "Harold and Joe" (1990) B-side on the single, Never Enough
11. "Close to Me (Closest Mix)" (1990) A-side on the 7" single
12. "High" (1992) from the album, Wish
13. "Friday I'm in Love" (1992) from the album, Wish
14. "The 13th (Swing Radio Mix)" (1996) A-side on the version 1 single
15. "Mint Car" (1996) from the album, Wild Mood Swings
16. "Cut Here" (2001) previously unreleased to the compilation album, Greatest Hits
17. "Just Say Yes" (2001) previously unreleased to the compilation album, Greatest Hits
18. "alt.end" (2004) from the album, The Cure
19. "Without You" (2008) B-side on the single, The Perfect Boy
20. "Sirensong" (2008) from the album, 4:13 Dream

I must make mention of the "The Only One (Remix 4 by 30 Seconds to Mars)." If you can get past the first two and a half minutes (and they're not bad - just an acquired taste), you get to this chill section that makes me want to stick a lighter in the air, weep openly, or in other words, buy the world a Coke.
