Movies for Men, Women, and Children

Lest I be accused of only liking certain kinds of movies, I'm including lists of my favorite sports flicks (for the guys), romances (for the gals), and children's features (not including animation).

Sports - featuring ex-champs making comebacks and overcoming their fears along with naturals who learn there's more to the game than winning
1. The Color of Money (1986) - Paul Newman finally gets his Oscar
2. Tin Cup (1996) - same character, but better than Bull Durham to me
3. The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) - directed by Robert Redford
4. The Bad News Bears (1976) - my pick for "America's favorite pastime"
5. The Longest Yard (1974) - my pick for "America's (actual) fav. pastime"
6. Chariots of Fire (1981) - my dad's favorite
7. He Got Game (1998) - mostly for the Copland music
8. North Shore (1987) - for The Karate Kid-like mentor
9. Thrashin' (1986) - which covers freestyle, vert, and SK8board racing
10. Rad (1986) - BMX slow-dance to "Send Me an Angel"

Romance - determined by which movies made me feel like I was there
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - destiny over choice
2. Before Sunset (2004) - the sequel
3. Before Sunrise (1995) - the original
4. Jerry Maguire (1995) - "you had me at hello"
5. Don Juan de Marco (1995) - more for Brando's marriage in the movie
6. Serendipity (2001) - Cusack + Beckinsale + Piven = love at first sight
7. Crazy/Beautiful (2001) - what a pair
8. Romeo + Juliet (1996) - it's all about the fish tank and the pool scenes
9. Dance with Me (1998) - atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere
10. Top Gun (1986) - the 1st time kissing didn't gross me out as a kid

Children's - movies that take you back no matter how old you are
1. E.T. (1982) - my favorite movie of all time
2. Babe (1995) - the opening credits alone are enough to make me cry
3. Babes in Toyland (1961) - my favorite full-length Christmas movie
4. The Parent Trap (1961) - the original
5. The Quest (1986) - Henry Thomas from E.T. goes down under
6. Big (1988) - an adult movie about kids
7. Home Alone (1990) - my second favorite full-length Christmas movie
8. The Goonies (1985) - adventure, crime, fantasy, romance...
9. The Sandlot (1993) - filled with one-liners
10. Ernest Goes to Camp (1987) - 1st movie I saw alone in the theater
