My first comic book didn't feature cute animals or superheroes. It was fun and it was fantastic, but it didn't feature any characters that were already familiar to me. I bought it without flipping through it. I had a similar experience with all the titles listed below. I must admit that probably four out of five comics that I buy now have superheroes, but saying that all comics have superheroes is like saying that all movies have happy endings. Most certainly do, but only because of demand. With that said, here are my top ten "indie" comics series (subject to change):
1. Courtney Crumrin (Oni) like Harry Potter without Hogwarts... or anybody like Harry for that matter; beautiful art
2. Hotwire (Radical) if Ghostbusters were a police thriller; beautiful art
3. Starslayer (Pacific) Celtic warrior becomes space pirate; backup feature was The Rocketeer; beautiful art
4. The Goon (Dark Horse) mobsters, monsters, femme fatales and pscyho kids; beautiful art
5. Mora (Image) beautiful art
6. Tom Strong (Wildstorm) blender of wonders
7. Street Angel (SLG) blender of everything else
8. Comic Book Digest (Evil Twin) a history of comic books as a comic book
9. Glamourpuss (Aardvark-Vanaheim) a history of comic strip art as a fashion magazine
10. Talent (Boom!) for fans of TV dramas like Lost
