My Top Ten Movies of 2008 (Revised)

It's taken me over halfway through 2009 to catch up on what I wanted to see in 2008. Now that I've seen everything I wanted (and I really wasn't missing much on DVD), I realize that I could've made this list before the new year started. I saw nearly all of the following movies on opening weekend and the two that I missed in theaters were out of my control, but I always knew I'd like them. My sole criterion for what made the list below and how it's ordered is a question of how much mileage I could get out of repeat viewings. There were many movies released in 2008 that I enjoyed the first time and could rewatch, but not as often as I could watch the ones below (compare this my premature list from last August):

1. The Dark Knight (July 18) See my 3/5/09 review.

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (December 26) See my 2/25/09 review.

3. Iron Man (May 2) People talk about Robert Downey Jr.'s performance but it's just as much Gwyneth Paltrow's movie. Ironically, I own this movie but not The Dark Knight.

4. Kung Fu Panda (June 6) The only movie that my two-year old son can watch all the way through. My wife was excited to learn at Comic-Con that there's a TV series in the works.

5. Redbelt (May 2) The first movie I've watched twice in a row since high school. Check the UFC documentaries on the DVD special features.

6. Gran Torino (December 12) See my 1/17/09 review.

7. Let the Right One In (October 24) See my 5/12/09 review.

8. Quantum of Solace (November 14) See my 11/14/08 review.

9. Two Tickets To Paradise (July 22 straight to DVD) Midlife crisis buddy comedy starring the couple from The Cutting Edge. I laughed out loud a lot and I don't normally do that.

10. Tell No One (July 4) I watched this French thriller based on the hype it was getting and while I didn't like everything about it, it's got some really great scenes and the whole thing's better than most of what's out there.
